Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear will be in Washington today to brief a congressional panel on the Commonwealth's problems with prescription drug abuse. Kentucky officials have been pressing for a national crackdown on prescription pills that are being diverted for illegal use. White House Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske visited Kentucky earlier this year to check out the state's drug issues. He says prescription pill abuse is taking a "heartbreaking" toll in Kentucky where scores of people are dying from overdoses each month.
