Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky General Assembly this year, or next, must re-draw congressional and legislative district lines. Lawmakers are starting to hold informational meetings on the complex topic.
Every ten years, after release of the U.S. Census, congressional and legislative district lines must be redrawn to reflect population shifts. House Speaker Greg Stumbo says redistricting issues were addressed during an informational, bipartisan workshop for Kentucky House members.
"To try to get them some working understanding of what the law is and what the requirements are, as we go through this process."
Stumbo prefers tackling redistricting this year in a special session, but says it may have to wait until the regular session in January. The House and Senate generally draw their own district lines, and then seek the other chamber's approval. Legislative and congressional district lines must be approved by both chambers.
