Hopkins County Magistrate Answers State Rep's Sports Complex Objections

By Drew Adams/Shelly Baskin

Murray, KY – A Hopkins County Magistrate is challenging State Representative Ben Waide's opposition to the county's proposed sports complex. Waide says he supports the project, but has issues with the funding. Waide says,

"Anybody in Hopkins County they'll tell you this would be nice it would be a nice addition to our community and I feel the same way. I'm very much for having a very nice facility. But in the same breath if you say If this cost us any more in taxes ' They immediately say No we don't want to raise taxes for this.'"

Magistrate Christopher Toney told the Madisonville Messenger that Waide's objections amount to political spin and scare tactics. He told the Fiscal Court the county has no plans to raise taxes to pay for the complex. The Magistrate has proposed hiring an independent company to conduct phone surveys of residents in order to assess public opinion on the project.
