Kentucky – A new "Kentucky environmental literacy plan" will soon be implemented in the commonwealth. As Dan Modlin reports, the goal of the program is to ensure that students are educated about the environment.
The plan has now received approval from the state board of education. Dr. Melinda Wilder of EKU is a co-chair of the task force working on the program.
"We've had a lot of news coverage about coal mining and EPA and watersheds and those sorts of things. And so for people to make good decisions about environmental issues like that they need to be environmentally literate."
Dr. Wilder says some new professional development training will encourage teachers to incorporate environmental information in a variety of classes. The implementation plan will be developed in upcoming months.
