Yeltsin himself has been characterizing the election as a choice between the economic future and the economic past. Some voters fear that if communist Gennady Zyuganov (genn-AH-dee zyoo-GAHN-ahv) is elected, relations with the West will deteriorate and further complicate Russia's troubled economic picture.
