NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports from Rome that despite vigorous Vatican denials that Pope John Paul II is seriously ill, its announcement that he'll undergo an appendectomy next week has opened a debate within the Catholic church about the legacy of this Pope, and possible changes in papal authority for the future.
