Tom Gjelten Reports From Buenos Aires That The Argentine Military's

support of democracy has become the model for other Latin American countries. Following the Falkland Islands debacle in the early 80's, the country's military gave up control to the civilian government. The military is now kept on a short leash, operating on a much smaller budget. Argentina has taken an active role in peacekeeping, both globally and in South America. Last year, it helped end fighting between Peru and Ecuador. This week, Argentine military officials are in Washington for meetings at the Pentagon.
