Manufacturers are feeling the sting of the slowing economy. As NPR's Jack Speer reports, factory layoffs have been recently announced at General Motors, Whirlpool, Gillette and other major industrial companies. Soaring energy prices, tighter credit and consumers who are suddenly balking at big ticket items have all contributed to the slowdown.
