Murray Residents Help in National Day of Service

By Angela Hatton

Murray, KY – Since 1994, communities have celebrated Martin Luther King, Junior day with a day of service. The National Day of Service in Murray drew around 160 volunteers. Murray State University biology major Jonah Waggoner signed up to help Needline, which provides food assistance. Waggoner says this is his first time volunteering for the event.

"I don't like the fact that it's only one day a year that everybody gets together and does something like this. But I still recognize how great it is that we do have this one day and, y'know, I hope that through each year it can grow and get better."

Seven local charities participated in the day of service. Volunteers also worked to gather donations that will go to disaster relief in Haiti. Murray's day of service is a partnership between the United Way, the city of Murray, the office of American Humanics, and Murray State University.
