Frankfort, KY – The legal drop out age would eventually become 18 under legislation approved in a senate committee today. The so-called "graduation bill" in its original form phased in the new restrictions by the year 2014. The Senate-amended bill delays the transition by another two years. Louisville senator Tim Shaughnessy opposes the change.
"Mrs Beshear's comments that we lose six thousand students a year do we want to lose 12 thousand students by postponing this, I don't think we want to do that."
Russell Springs senator Vernie MaGaha voted against the bill. MaGaha wonders about parental responsibility for older high schoolers.
"If living at home we can put the pressure on the parents are the parents still responsible for the child when they are sixteen and not living at home."
The house bill now goes to the senate floor.
