Frankfort, KY – Time is running out for Kentucky legislators to approve a two-year state budget by the April 15th deadline. Governor Steve Beshear is hopeful they'll reach a consensus.
The main sticking point between House and Senate negotiators is a proposal to borrow millions of dollars to build new schools and other projects - House Democrats say it's a way to create jobs, Senate Republicans say the state shouldn't borrow money in the current economy. Beshear says he's hopeful they'll find common ground by the deadline.
"I don't think the legislature will want to face the voters of this state this fall if they don't do the job the voters sent them up there to do."
The Governor says if the General Assembly fails to pass a budget by Thursday, he'll be forced to call a special session, at a taxpayer cost of sixty-thousand dollars per day.
