Murray, KY – The Kentucky General Assembly will convene for a special session in just under two weeks. First District Senator Ken Winters of Murray says he still supports the compromise the Senate proposed before the end of the regular session. Winters says he likely won't change his opinion about the House proposed spending on infrastructure projects.
"We're gonna have to cut a lot of people's budgets in this next biennium. Then, y'know, how can you rationalize going another billion-two in debt?"
Winter says the only capital project he supports is construction for schools labeled category five. Charter schools will not be a part of the discussion during the special session, but Winters believes there wasn't time to craft legislation anyway. Kentucky missed out on federal Race to the Top funding last round in part due to a lack of charter schools The application deadline for the next round is June 1, and Winters says without charter schools, Kentucky's bid is still strong.
