Frankfort, KY – The topic of charter schools was left off the agenda for the upcoming special legislative session to deal with state budget, but Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday is holding out hope.
"At least people are talking about it. No one has said absolutely not, no way. The governor's still considering it. I'm sure he's talking to house leadership, senate leadership about the possibility, so, y'know, we'll see. I've got a lot of folks who aren't very interested in it, would not like to see it, but they understand why we're talking about it."
Holliday says allowing charter schools in Kentucky would boost the state's chances of receiving millions of dollars in federal Race to the Top funds. The Commonwealth missed out during the first round of awards. The next application deadline is June 1.
