Introducing Whitfield's Challenger

By Jacque Day

Benton, Ky. – The longtime Republican incumbent in western Kentucky's First Congressional District, Ed Whitfield, gets to relax during Tuesday's primary. Still, his relatively unknown opponent says he'll be paying close attention to the primaries across Kentucky as he gears up to challenge Whitfield this November. Charles Kendall Hatchett, a 58-year-old Democrat from Benton, is a professional auctioneer with a real estate license. He says he relates to people struggling to make a living. "I really think that congressman's salaries should be tied to the income of his district. And then maybe we wouldn't be so interested in shipping jobs overseas or outsourcing jobs." Hatchett admits he's done a lot of different jobs the last two years to try to stay afloat. He says his goals include making western Kentucky a prime location for horse sanctuaries.
