Hopkinsville, KY – Two Democrats are hoping to win the mayor's race in Hopkinsville Tuesday. Incumbent Mayor Dan Kemp has been mayor since 2006. He faces nursing home administrator and 30-year former city council member Richard Covington. Kentucky New Era Editor Jennifer Brown says both men have a strong track record of experience in city government. She says it's hard to make a prediction about who will win.
"You cannot ever ignore the advantage of an incumbent. That could be a factor in this race, but in terms of whether one of them has an edge over the other right now based on issues. I don't know that."
The winner of Tuesday's primary will win the election because no Republican has filed to run. The Christian County Clerk's office reports no Republican has held the Hopkinsville mayor's position since 1989.
