Richmond, KY – Traumatic brain injuries are on the rise among U.S. soldiers returning home from combat overseas. The state Division of Behavioral Health is holding a conference tomorrow to address that increase and look for ways the state can better serve those soldiers when they return. The Division's Devon Lindsey says the conference hopes to put soldiers, their families, and those who can help them in the same place.
"I think people just, they don't really understand all that's involved in making sure that soldiers can transition successfully. If you go from being in a combat situation to shopping at Wal-Mart, it's a very different environment."
The conference is tomorrow at Eastern Kentucky University. The U.S. Department of Defense says between 2003 and 2007, more than 43,000 U.S. service members were diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries.
