Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Senate has narrowly given final approval to a resolution commending Arizona's governor and lawmakers on that state's tough new immigration law. The measure sponsored by Republican Senator Jim Tracy gained 17 votes in favor, the minimum needed for measures to pass the Senate. Fifteen Republicans and two Democrats voted for the bill.
The House last month passed its version 67-27. The governor has no power to veto joint resolutions. The measure congratulates Arizona lawmakers and Governor Jan Brewer for their actions in passing the law. The Arizona law requires authorities to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally.
