A Kentucky Poultry official says the bird flu outbreak issue is contained.
There was one outbreak in Kentucky and three in Tennessee in March. The strains were low-pathogenic with the exception of one high-pathogenic incident in Tennessee. Infected flocks were depopulated and surrounding farms were put under quarantine. Kentucky Poultry Federation Executive Director Jamie Guffy said he thinks agriculture officials did a good job containing the bird flu, however poultry disease is always a concern.
“We’re still in a heightened state of biosecurity and we’re still watching and waiting to see what happens in the future,” Guffy said.
Following the outbreak in Kentucky, State Veterinarian Robert Stout put a temporary ban on poultry show events and commingling sales. Still, Guffy said he expects the economic impact of the bird flu to be small. There was also one low-pathogenic outbreak in Georgia.
