Paducah Recycling Facility Faces Possible Closing

The City of Paducah could face serious issues with its recycling capabilities in the near future. During a workshop Tuesday, Greater Paducah Sustainability Project-RecycleNow representatives updated the mayor and commissioners on its status.

The nonprofit organization has managed a recycling operation in a facility owned by Paducah Water for the past four years. This December, Paducah Water will need the building back. GPSP-RecycleNow Treasurer Bob Johnson said the situation is dire.

“Operations cease at the end of the year with no building,” he said. “It can’t be much worse than that, which is a shame because we are financially sound. We just don’t have enough money to buy a new building.”

During the past three years, GPSP-RecycleNow has reviewed 26 locations and hasn’t found an available building that’s both suitable and affordable. The city has helped the nonprofit look for a new home, and the city manager will meet with GPSP-RecycleNow soon to continue the search.
