Owensboro Company Producing Experimental Ebola Treatment

Wikimedia Commons

In the midst of the ongoing Ebola crisis, an Owensboro company has ramped up production on an experimental treatment.

Kentucky BioProcessing is a subsidiary of Reynolds American Incorporated that’s working to produce a plant-based compound known as ZMapp.

The drug had previously been used to treat American aid workers with the disease.

Spokesman David Howard says supplies are still somewhat limited.

“All of our efforts at Kentucky Bioprocessing are completely focused on production on ZMapp," Howard said.

"It takes two or three months from beginning to end producing the compound."

Howard says despite production and its previous use, ZMapp is not yet approved for consumer distribution.
