West Kentucky and Hickman-Fulton Counties RECCs Consider Merger

Two electric service cooperatives are discussing a merger that would include 35,000 customers from Kentucky Lake to the Mississippi River. The Executive Committees of the West Kentucky Rural Electric and Hickman-Fulton Counties Rural Electric met Thursday to explore a merger of the neighboring cooperatives, authorizing a joint financial study including a combined ten-year financial forecast.

The cooperatives agree the recent resignation of Hickman-Fulton RECC President Greg Grissom creates a convenient opportunity to explore the merger.

Hickman-Fulton County RECC Board President David Kimbell says both boards are taking careful consideration.  “Our board wants to study all options as we move forward in deciding the future of our co-op for our members and employees,” Kimbell said. “Any decision for a merger has to benefit the members of both merging co-ops.”

Both boards agreed a merger would only be completed if it ultimately would save members money through economies of scale, protecting local jobs and expand resources and expertise.
