Purple Toad Petitions County to Allow Sunday Sales

publicdomainpictures.net

A McCracken County winery is petitioning officials to allow it to sell alcohol on Sundays in order to keep up with competing businesses.

Purple Toad Winery owner Allen Dossey needs to collect 70 signatures to ask county commissioners to either pass his request or put the decision up for a vote.

Dossey says Sundays are one of the main days couples get off together which means losing one of the most profitable tourism days to competitors.

“We’ve got around 25 southern Illinois wineries within about 60 miles and essentially every one of those are open on Sundays, and we lose a ton of business on Sunday afternoons to them," said Dossey.

Last month, Graves County commissioners passed an ordinance allowing Sunday sales at the Fancy Farm winery, one of Purple Toad’s main competitors.

The petition must be submitted 30 days after the most recent election.
