Kentucky Post Offices Likely Busy All Week

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS, PUBLIC DOMAIN

Lots of packages, cards, and letters are moving across the country this week.  A Kentucky U.S. Postal official says this is the busiest mailing, shipping, and delivering week of the year.

Kentucky U.S. Postal Service Spokeswoman Susan Wright said 200 million packages alone, will be moving from spot to spot this week.  She admits the mail mix has changed significantly with fewer Christmas cards and more e-commerce.  With that in mind, Wright said to think about package security. “Thieves are opportunistic, so with this much volume being delivered, it’s a perfect opportunity if customers don’t take care to make sure they don’t become the victim of a porch pirate,” Wright said.

Wright said it’s important not to leave delivered mail or packages unattended.  If securing a package relatively quickly is not an option, Wright said it can be held for pickup at the post office.

While it’s an extremely busy time at post offices all over Kentucky, Wright says it’s not a time of new hires.  “The postal service strategy has been to focus on keeping career, full-time employees on the rolls all year long.  So, we’re just flexing that network that we already have in place during the holiday season,” noted Wright.

Wright says the deadline for getting cards and letters out in time for Christmas Day through standard first class and priority mail delivery is Thursday.  The deadline for priority mail express is December 22nd.
