Murray State's Cinema International Presents: Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat
This polyphonic, multilingual documentary traces the connections between Patrice Lumumba, the first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the American jazz musicians who celebrated his rise to power and staged a protest at the UN Security Council after he was assassinated. The film applies the techniques of bebop jazz to explore the global role of American music in an era of Cold War tensions and decolonization.
