PSAD presents "A Room of Her Own" by Lu Colby

PSAD presents "A Room of Her Own" by Lu Colby

Solo exhibit by PSAD graduate, Lu Colby

Artist Talk, November 2 - Opening reception, November 3

Lu Colby, a graduate of Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD), will debut her latest 3D installation works in an upcoming exhibition titled “A Room of Her Own” at the Bill Ford Gallery located in PSAD’s 2D Graphic Design Building, 905 Harrison Street in Paducah’s historic Lower Town. Colby will present an artist talk, Thursday, November 2, at 12:30 p.m., and an opening exhibition reception will be held, Friday, November 3, from 5-6:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

Colby said of her work, “In the last hundred years, expectations placed upon women have evolved from domestic laborer to full-time careerist, and full-time mothers to outsourcing childcare. These major shifts have forced us, as a society, to examine what this means for women’s work, women’s bodies, and what it means for women’s relationships with their partners, family members, friends, and children,” she said. “While creating, I think about what former generations of women’s experience with life was and how it parallels my experiences today. How did it not? By creating work that questions those perceived gender roles and experiences, I may find resolve in my own.”

Colby received an Associate in Fine Arts degree from PSAD in 2016, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking and sculpture in 2019 from Murray State University (MSU), and a Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from Louisiana State University (LSU) in 2023.

Professionally exhibiting work across the United States since 2016, Colby has works in many collections, including the University of North Florida, Jacksonville; University of Texas at Arlington; and LSU, Baton Rouge. She will have an additional upcoming solo exhibit, “Eve Leaving the Garden,” at Glassell Gallery in Baton Rouge. Colby is currently an adjunct instructor at MSU.

“A Room of Her Own” exhibit will be on display November 2 through December 7, 2023. The Bill Ford Gallery hours: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
