The Hopkins County School Board plans to tear down its new Career and Technology Center and start again at a new site because of compounding foundation problems. Work on the tech center stopped last year after officials discovered the foundation was sinking. The site is on top on of a reclaimed strip mine. Previously, the school district hoped mircopiles would stabilize the building. But The Madisonville Messenger reports the foundation has settled another 2 to 3 inches, and stabilization is no longer a viable option. Assistant Facilities Superintendent Steve Gilliam says further work would add as much as two million dollars to the project. Gilliam says it’s cheaper to start over. School officials are currently looking for a new location. Hopkins County Schools has so far invested $6.3 million in the project.
