Mid-Continent Students Could Be Given Transfer Status to MSU

Mid-Continent University is undergoing a deep financial crisis that could result in the school's closure.  In turn, many are wondering what would happen to the students.

If the Mayfield-based Christian university were to shut its doors, the more than 2,500 displaced students would need to transfer to another college to finish out their degrees.

Murray State Transfer Director Maria Rosa says the university is willing and able to take in some of the displaced Mid-Continent students.

“At Murray State, we are always happy to help students transfer from any institution," said Rosa. "We accept credits coming from regionally accredited institutions and we try to take really good care of our transfer students. So we would be happy to help.”

In December, Mid-Continent’s accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools was put on “warning status”, but Rosa says that shouldn't be a problem for transfer students so long as credits are earned while accreditation is valid.

To transfer, students need to apply with the registrar’s office and submit official transcripts from all institutions attended. If accepted, courses are transferred to Murray State equivalencies.

Yesterday, MCU Board of Trustees Chairman Tom Butler Sr. said the Department of Education had rejected their submissions for federal financial aid over the last several months. As a result, the university had to pay nearly $9 million dollars of its own money towards tuition assistance, textbooks and other costs, which put a huge strain on the school's $22 million budget.

Whether Mid-Continent will close may be revealed after an upcoming Board of Trustees meeting.
