MSU College of Education & Health Services Receives $150,000 "Giving Back Endowment"

Last year, Murray State students studying fundraising in non-profit leadership conducted a competitive grant process designed to familiarize them with what funders look for when reviewing proposals. Students then developed grant proposals, made formal presentations of their recommendations and conducted a peer review process.

The result was the ward of a $1,000 grant from the Giving Back Fund to the Murray Art Guild. Dr. Bob Long innovated this kind of class and with his wife, Patricia Mendez-Long, has made a gift to ensure its continuation. Kate Lochte speaks with Dr. David Whaley, Dean of College of Education and Human Services and Dr. Bob Long on Sounds Good.

Murray State’s College of Education and Human Services has received a gift from Non Profit Leadership faculty member Dr. Bob Long and Patricia Mendez-Long that funds a “Giving Back” endowment. The “Giving Back” Endowment perpetuates and proliferates Dr. Long’s work in the classroom:

“If there’s always this bit of resource there, faculty may begin to explore this notion, and have the opportunity to have some money to help students get more engaged in the community and the application of the principles and theories taught in the class and or have some money to have the students actually give away in a student philanthropic model.”

COEHS Dean David Whaley explains next steps for the “Giving Back” endowment:

“We will work with Bob and others to ensure that his vision for a committee comprised of representatives from different walks of life both from Murray State and in the community come together with some basic tenets about how to use the money but then are in the decision making role.”

College of Education and Human Services faculty member Dr. Bob Long brought the principles of philanthropy into non-profit leadership classes and with his wife, Patricia Mendez-Long, have seeded a new "Giving Back Endowment" at Murray State with a gift of $150,000.

More information about the endowment is available through the Office of Development or the Office of the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services, Dr. David Whaley.
