Tennessee approved phasing out common core Friday to make way for “Tennessee Academic Standards.” Board of Education Executive Director Sara Heyburn says there will be a transition year for training before implementing the new standards in the 2017-2018 school year.
“I think it’s safe to say we all feel really good about both the process that we have undertaken and the product that results here at the end of the line,” Heyburn said.
Heyburn says criteria for the core subjects: math, language arts, science and social studies, will change.
“We’ve worked closely like I said with our higher ed community and some national content experts to ensure we didn’t lose any rigor in this review process but only strengthened our standards and really set what we feel like are meaningful learning expectations for students in Tennessee that will enable them to have success post high school,” Heyburn said.
Heyburn says Tennessee has never done as public or comprehensive of a review of standards. The process took nearly two years.
