Marshall Co. Schools Addresses Rumors About 'Hit-List' Student

Marshall County Schools officials are trying to dispel social media rumors of a high school student with a “hit list” on other classmates after he was caught with a knife at school.

Marshall County Schools Superintendent Trent Lovett addressed an audience of news outlets and worried parents Monday morning. He said the student who brought the knife last week got two days of in-school detention, during which he threatened to hurt the student that got him into trouble.

The school then issued a different punishment, but cannot say what it was or when the student will return to school due to FERPA laws. Marshall County High School Principal Amy Waggoner said panic spread when misinformation appeared on social media over the weekend.

Several parents at the meeting said that they wouldn’t let their child return until school officials could guarantee their safety.

The school didn’t note a drop in attendance Monday and Lovett said they will count the students absent if they are out because of the situation.
