Madisonville residents are the first in the Pennyrile region to have free curbside recycling provided by the city.
Mayor David Jackson says rising fuel costs and tipping fees at area garbage dumps along with environmental concerns were factors in their decision to start the program. Jackson says the program is completely voluntary and won’t punish non-participants. He says,
“Initially we looked at having an extra fee, but actually decided the program is such a good program and is able to stand on its own merits. I believe that people recognize the importance of recycling and by and large we’ve had a great response from the community so far with regards to the program.”
Jackson says city residents who pay sanitation fees are eligible for the program. The city is taking orders for recycling totes. He says the program will begin pickups October 1st.
