Whitfield Joins River Industry in Opposing Mississippi Flow Reduction

Rep. Ed Whitfield

Kentucky U. S. Congressman Ed Whitfield has joined those calling on the Army Corps of Engineers to increase water flow on the Mississippi River. The Corps has reduced flow from the Missouri River into the Mississippi to preserve water reservoirs. But barge industry officials say the move threatens their livelihood. Whitfield says already low drought levels would result in cargo delays valued at roughly $7 billion. The Corps maintains cutting the flow of the Missouri is essential in case of another drought in 2013.
