Radioactive Leak at Honeywell
Honeywell’s Metropolis facility experienced a leak of the radioactive gas, Uranium Hexaflouride Sunday night around 7:35. Honeywell officials say the leak was caused by an equipment failure in the main production building.
Plant personnel activated emergency procedures and emergency teams contained the leak. No injuries or indications that any UF6 material left the sight have been reported.
Honeywell officials say a water mist surrounding the facility was due to plant water mitigation systems used to contain the leak.
The plant says it has informed the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and is continuing an investigation into the incident and how much material was released.
