Paducah is a ‘Tree City USA’ for the 26th consecutive year.

The Arbor Day Foundation gives the designation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

The City of Paducah said in a release they achieved the honor through efforts to plant trees and care for trees in the city. The Paducah Board of Commissioners approved a motion to create a tree conservation strategy for the city at its last meeting.

Mayor Brandi Harless said “communities worldwide are facing issues with air quality, water resources, personal health and energy use.”

A Tree City USA must meet four requirements to receive the designation. The city must have a ‘tree board’ or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Planning Director Tammara Tracy said in a release that it’s important to recognize trees as a “critical element of our infrastructure network.”

Paducah is one of more than 3,400 Tree City USAs. In 2016, Cadiz, Bowling Green, Beaver Dam, Madisonville and Owensboro were designated as well.
