City In Muhlenberg County Under Investigation For Dozens Of Gas Pipeline Safety Violations

Brian Stansberry

The Kentucky Public Service Commission in a release says a city’s natural gas pipeline system in Muhlenberg County is under investigation after a recent inspection found 35 safety violations.

Those violations include potentially having jail inmates operate the system, failing to make repairs to a damaged pipeline and failing to add a smell to the odorless gas for easier leak detection in homes.

The commission says Drakesboro city officials could have to pay more than $7 million dollars in fines if found guilty of all violations. City officials have until Friday to either shut down their natural gas system or have a third-party company run it for them.

A third-party company that has been running the system in recent weeks also hasn’t been paid for their work. The company will shut down the system unless the city can come to agreement on a contract.

The commission says Drakesboro officials have also been ordered to appear at a hearing in Frankfort on March 8 to testify about the inspection. Find the case filed by the commission and the inspection report here.
