Paducah Commissioners get Budget Preview

Paducah City Commissioners got an overview of the projected budget for the next fiscal year at last night’s meeting.  City Manager Jeff Pederson says the coming year will be challenging because revenues will likely be flat.  The city is seeing a slight increase due a rise in the payroll tax, but those gains are offset by declines in the insurance premium tax.  Pederson says he expects General Fund revenue gains to only be about 1 percent over last year.  However, several expenditures are also expected to rise.  They include employee wage increases, fuel and insurance costs, and mandated contributions to the state pension fund.  They total around 6 hundred and 62 thousand dollars.  In other commission news, Paducah Mayor Bill Paxton presented the city’s highest honor, the Mayor’s Award of Merit, to LowerTown Arts and Music Festival co-director Michael Terra.  In making the presentation, Paxton said volunteers like Terra are what makes Paducah great.

Todd Hatton hails from Paducah, Kentucky, where he got into radio under the auspices of the late, great John Stewart of WKYX while a student at Paducah Community College. He also worked at WKMS in the reel-to-reel tape days of the early 1990s before running off first to San Francisco, then Orlando in search of something to do when he grew up. He received his MFA in Creative Writing at Murray State University. He vigorously resists adulthood and watches his wife, Angela Hatton, save the world one plastic bottle at a time.
