IL Lawmakers Face High-Profile Issues

Illinois lawmakers will face high-profile issues in their six-day full session that begins Tuesday. Legislators will decide whether to reject vetoes by Governor Pat Quinn on expanded gambling, keeping prisons open and banning assault rifles. Quinn also rejected a plan to add five casinos in the state, but lawmakers hope to avoid overriding the veto and plant to negotiate a deal. The Senate also plans to vote on restoring funding for prisons Quinn wants closed. The move wouldn’t force Quinn to keep facilities like Tamms and Dwight running, but it would keep him from using the money elsewhere. Quinn rewrote a bill in August to ban assault weapons after the mass shooting at a theater in Colorado. His office has not said he will push the bill.
