LIHEAP Numbers Decline With Warm Weather

The energy assistance program for low-income families, or LIHEAP (LYE-heep) is seeing a drop in Purchase area applicants by almost 25 percent this winter due to unusually warm weather. West Kentucky Allied Services administers the program in Mayfield.

WKAS spokesman Tony Dowdy says families who might need assistance in early 2013 need to apply now in case of a January crisis.

“As always in the subsidy program we can spend as much money as we need to help give a subsidy to every family if they qualify," Dowdy said. " So right now it looks ok, but in crisis we’ve been told our funding will be reduced. Then when we open up in January we may not operate very many days.”

Applicants must provide physical copies of social security cards for all members in the household and income statements for everyone over the age of 18.
