Brookport Mayor Recovering After Car Crash, City Council Selects Interim Mayor

The hospital condition of the mayor of tornado-ravaged Brookport, Illinois is improving, days after he was injured in a car wreck. A spokeswoman for Deaconess Hospital in Evansville said Mayor John Klaffer was in stable condition Monday.

Klaffer was injured Friday in a head-on collision while delivering mail as a postal worker. Brookport’s city council selected one of its own, Tom Souders, to serve as interim mayor until Klaffer recovers.

Three people died in Brookport during the November 17th tornado. Souders says he’s “just going to carry on” with storm recovery efforts.
