Senate Candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes maintained that raising the minimum wage is a good political platform as she campaigned through West Kentucky over the weekend.
At a stop in Murray for the Democrat's annual Purchase Area Jefferson-Jackson Dinner Grimes railed against the current minimum wage.
“Seven dollars and twenty five cents an hour cannot a family of four live on to barely rise above the poverty level. Together, we will make sure that we can grow the middle class by giving them a wage that they can actually live the American Dream on.”
A bill that would have raised Kentucky's minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 failed in the 2014 Kentucky General Assembly. Opponents said the wage hike would have caused a loss of jobs, while proponents advocated the bill would have helped low-wage workers.
Grimes' opponent Incumbent U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell does not support increasing minimum wage, stating to the Senate that doing so could cost Kentucky 17,000 jobs. The two remain in a tight race for the seat.
