As Kentucky’s Republicans hope to take control of the state House of Representatives by electing a majority this fall, second district incumbent Richard Heath (R) is in a fight for his seat with Jesse Wright (D). At this weekend’s Fancy Farm Picnic Heath and Wright tangled over who would be a better advocate for their district which encompasses Graves County and southern McCracken.
Heath took his time at the podium to rail against what he called job killing federal policies and a State House controlled by liberal Democrats.
“House Democratic leadership has placed even more debt on the back of hard working Kentucky Tax Payers…. (They) voted to increase the gas tax…” said Heath.
Wright criticized Heath by saying, “I’m concerned we don’t have a voice that is representing us in Frankfort… I’m concerned we have only had two bills proposed on behalf of Graves County in the past two years, we have to have a voice.”
Wright drew from his background as an attorney as a case for his election by saying he would be an advocate just like he advocates for his clients.
Heath carried the state Republican Party’s message by focusing on changing house control and re-electing U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell.
“This November it is not only imperative to flip the state house but that we elect Senator Mitch McConnell the next Majority leader of the U.S. Senate and in so doing we will finally tap into our real potential. “
Heath is a first term Republican and is holding a previously long-held democratic seat by Fred Nesler.
