Commonwealth Attorney G.L. Ovey is retiring effective Jan. 1, five days before McCracken County Judge Executive Van Newberry and Deputy Judge-Executive Doug Harnice’s trial for zoning charges.
Ovey is the special prosecutor for that case, and he says the next step is in the Attorney General’s hands.
“They appointed me (to that case), and then they will have to seek a new special prosecutor,” he said.
In Ovey’s statement he expressed support for jail time for drug addicts before treatment and for the death penalty.
Ovey has served in the office for almost 27 years. He says his daughter and assistant Carrie Ovey-Wiggins is seeking Governor Steve Beshear’s appointment to the position.
