This Wednesday - New Year's Eve - is the deadline to switch your party affiliation for next May’s primary election in Kentucky, due to the state’s “closed” primary system.

Calloway County Clerk Antonia Faulkner says the process of changing your affiliation only takes a few minutes and you can do it in person at the court house or print out a card and mail it.

“If it’s put in the mail and postmarked December 31, we’ll take care of that for you,” Faulkner said. “It’s a fairly simple process - it’s just the time limit. You have to get that done by that date to get to vote in May.”

The marquee 2015 contest in Kentucky is the race to replace term-limited Gov. Steve Beshear. So far, Democratic state Attorney General Jack Conway is facing only a minor primary challenge from Geoff Young. The Republican gubernatorial primary is more competitive, with Agriculture Commissioner James Comer facing off against former Louisville councilman Hal Heiner, who has already given millions of dollars of his own money to his campaign.

The primary election is set for May 20, 2015.
