A Bowling Green doctor has been charged with conspiracy to distribute and dispense controlled
substances, health care fraud and money laundering.
Sixty-three year old cardiologist Charles Fred Gott was arrested in Nashville this morning, where he was attending a diesel mechanic’s school, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. District’s Attorney’s Office.
Director of the Bowling Green-Warren County Drug Task Force, Tommy Loving, said authorities
first served a search warrant and seized Dr. Gott’s medical records in February 2013.
“What started this investigation initially was that we received a call from Kevin Kirby, the Warren County coroner, about an unusual number of overdose deaths that were Doctor Gott’s patients," said Loving. "And that was the actually the catalyst to start the investigation.”
According to the federal indictment released today, Dr. Gott is charged with distributing and dispensing Methadone, Fentanyl and Hydrocodone that was not for legitimate medical purposes.
Dr. Gott is also charged with directing his staff to do unnecessary tests to measure lung function, and submitting fraudulent claims to health care programs, including Medicare, Medicaid and Anthem.
Dr. Gott appeared in federal court this morning in Bowling Green and was released on his own
recognizance. His arraignment is scheduled for June 24.
