Governor Steve Beshear is expressing confidence that county clerks in Kentucky will, in time, adhere to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. There are a few county clerks still refusing to issue marriage licenses. Governor Beshear said it's not for him to say whether or not those clerks should step down.
"That's gonna be a matter up to each local person and local voters. But, as I say, I think in a few months I think all of this will work itself out. I'm proud that the vast majority of clerks have marched on and are doing their job." Beshear said.
The governor said he would be willing to sit down with any clerk who has decided not to issue marriage licenses applications and counties where clerks are refusing may see issues resolved in court or at the ballot box.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruling exemplifies a 'big cultural change' Beshear said, and there are expectedly differences of opinion.
