Rally In Frankfort For Clerks Denying Marriage Licenses

RXUYDC, Public Domain, Wikimedia Commons

On Saturday, a rally will take place at the state capitol building in Frankfort in support of three county clerks who refuse to issue marriage licenses after same sex marriage was legalized by the Supreme Court.

The clerks—Kim Davis of Rowan County, Casey Davis of Casey County and Kay Schwartz of Whitley County—say their religious beliefs prevent them from issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples.

Also in attendance will be state lawmakers who say Kentucky needs to pass laws to protect clerks who don’t want to issue marriage licenses.  Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis is currently being sued by residents in her county who have been denied marriage licenses. Davis was ordered to resume issuing licenses earlier this week, but the ruling was stayed while she appeals the case.
