The Kentucky Department of Local Government is awarding a $100,000 grant to the city of Madisonville for continued development of Mahr Park.

Mayor David Jackson said the grant will be used to construct the park’s trail system. He said the city is aiming to open the park next year.

“I would say right now as far as what we’re going to have open as far as late spring or early summer of next year, we’re probably 50 or 60 percent there,” Jackson said.

Jackson said along with trail work, the city is working with the group Growing Warriors to start a veterans’ gardening program and the local agriculture extension office to build a pavilion and parking lot and provide educational programs.
