After voters decided to go wet this summer, the Marshall County Fiscal Court has approved its alcoholic beverage control ordinance.

The court voted 3-1 Friday morning on the ordinance, which allows Sunday by-the-drink liquor sales at restaurants from 1 p.m. until midnight. Commissioner Bob Gold cast the dissenting vote against the ordinance.

The city councils of both Benton and Calvert City have also approved Sunday by-the-drink sales in their ordinances. Calvert City will allow packaged sales seven days a week from 6 a.m. until midnight.

The county will not begin accepting liquor sales applications until after October 4 when Marshall County officially goes wet, but prospective business owners can pick up applications at the county courthouse beginning next week.

Assistant county attorney Jason Darnall said that potential owners of by-the-drink establishments will have to take a responsible server training course before their application can be approved. Darnall said that minimum distances from schools and churches will ultimately be decided on a case-by-case basis.
