Health and law enforcement officials in Kentucky are responding to a rash of heroin-related drug overdoses. In the community of Mount Sterling alone, there were 12 overdoses this week including one death.
The majority of overdoses in Montgomery County occurred within five hours Wednesday evening.
Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy Director Van Ingram says drug cartels in Mexico are chemically producing toxic drugs, sold as heroin. He says users are not aware of what they are getting. “An opioid use disorder is an extremely strong addiction,” said Ingram. “And there will be those who are willing to risk it.”
Ingram says there will continue to be increased funding for treatment for addicts. High numbers of overdoses were also reported this week in Cincinnati, Huntington West Virginia, and southern Indiana.?
