KY Officials Lease Cables for Statewide Broadband Project

Kentucky officials have agreed to lease 315 miles of fiber-optic cables from five rural telephone companies as they seek ways to lower the cost of a massive broadband project.

The planned statewide broadband network powered by more than 3,000 miles of cables has been plagued by delays and financing troubles. The Kentucky Communications Network Authority oversees the project but has not met in more than six months.

The authority signed an agreement Thursday with Bluegrass Network to tap into its network. State officials have not said how they plan to pay for the state's share of the network's cost.
